Downtown Chandler Lost a Corner in August. The Holiday Season Has Other Places to Eat.

The southeast corner of Arizona Avenue and Boston Street has been dark since the end of August. The Uncommon held that corner as a lunch-and-dinner diner and bar, and its breakfast sister, Tipsy Egg, was right next door to the south. Recreo Cantina, owned by the same group, closed on the same night. All three ended service for good on Saturday, Aug. 29.

From August into mid-October, two new restaurants opened a short walk away and an existing lounge added a morning coffee program. Together they now cover the same meals the corner used to serve: a weekend breakfast, a taco-and-beer stop and a place for a late drink. That's the useful part as Downtown Chandler heads into its biggest season, from the Holiday Magic light display that opens Nov. 28 to the Tumbleweed Tree Lighting and Parade of Lights on Saturday, Dec. 5.

What closed, and what's planned for those spaces

The closures happened quickly. Mouth by Southwest reported that all three restaurants first went dark with plans to reopen by the weekend. A day later, the plan changed to a permanent closure at the end of business that Saturday. The group's manager told the outlet the closures were making room for new concepts, with more Downtown Chandler projects planned for late 2026 and early 2027 and details still to come. The Chandler Independent reported the same late-2026-or-2027 window.

No replacement names had been announced as of late October. For this holiday season, plan on the corner at Arizona and Boston staying empty.

Tap N Taco, a few doors south of the empty corner

Tap N Taco is the newcomer closest to the closed corner. It opened Monday, Oct. 12, in the former Serrano's Mexican Food Restaurant building on the east side of Arizona Avenue, just south of Boston Street. The brand started in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, in 2021, and Chandler is its second location.

The menu is built around $2 street tacos: asada, al pastor, barbacoa, chicken, sausage, potato, and beer-battered shrimp or cod. The same fillings go into $7 quesadillas and $8.50 loaded fries, nachos and baked potatoes. Birria is served Mondays and Tuesdays, and there's a full bar. The restaurant takes the dining side of the building. Mouth by Southwest reports that the old banquet halls are set to become shared offices for local entrepreneurs. The Chandler Independent lists an 8 p.m. Sunday close. Mouth by Southwest and the restaurant's own site say 9 p.m., so check before a Sunday visit.

Lomas Cocina de México, inside a padel club

Lomas opened in August at the southwest corner of Arizona Avenue and Chandler Boulevard, inside Padeland, a padel and pickleball club. You walk through the restaurant to get to the courts. The building used to be Look Dine-In Cinemas, which closed in February 2025. The theme is the 1980s Mexican social club. Mouth by Southwest describes a crowd that's as likely to be in athletic gear as dressed for dinner.

On weekends, Lomas opens at 8 a.m. with chilaquiles, Sonora-style omelets and a $19 chile relleno de pan de elote. At night it serves street tacos from $12 to $21, a $62 parrillada ribeye, and a raw bar with shrimp aguachile, hamachi tiradito and a blue crab tostada. The bar has separate tequila and mezcal lists, plus a bacanora section with drinks like a Sonoran Mule.

SanTan Spirit House, now open from 8 a.m.

SanTan Spirit House isn't new to downtown. What's new is the morning. The SanTan Brewing cocktail lounge started an all-day coffee program with Press Coffee, held a soft opening Oct. 8 and a grand opening Oct. 12. According to Mouth by Southwest, the menu includes drip, cold brew and lattes, plus specialty drinks like Toasted Cabana Boy and Afternoon Delight at $6.25 for a regular. Any coffee can be spiked with a SanTan Distilling spirit if you're drinking it there, and the lounge now serves the full SanTan Brewpub menu from next door. It's open 8 a.m. to midnight Sunday through Thursday and until 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. That's a long day, and it covers both Tipsy Egg's breakfast hours and the late-night bar crowd.

Still on the way

Greenwood Brewing announced a taproom at 55 N. Arizona Place in The AJ, with beer, wine, light bites and picnic baskets. The brewery's website still lists the Downtown Chandler location as opening soon, with no date. Don't build holiday plans around it yet.

Nov. 28 starts the season

Downtown Chandler Holiday Magic Featuring Sugarland runs from Nov. 28 through Jan. 3. It includes a glowing light tunnel, a giant walk-through gift box, a candy sleigh, oversized candy canes, and life-size Santa figures around the district. The free kickoff, Prancer's Pajama Party, runs from 4 to 6 p.m. on Nov. 28 with reindeer games, crafts and hot chocolate. Wearing pajamas is encouraged.

Small Business Saturday falls on the same day. Downtown Chandler lists live music from 1 to 4 p.m. and a free shopping guide at the Crust Lawn from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on its event page. One older city holiday page still shows a 2025 calendar with a Nov. 29 date. The downtown page lists Nov. 28, 2026.

Coffee at Spirit House, an afternoon of shopping, then the pajama party at 4 p.m. makes a full day without a reservation.

Planning around Dec. 5

The Tumbleweed Tree Lighting Ceremony is free and runs from 4:30 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5, at 3 S. Arizona Ave. The Parade of Lights runs from 6:45 to 8 p.m., heading north on Arizona Avenue from Frye Road to Erie Street. According to Visit Chandler, the tree is built from nearly 1,200 tumbleweeds on a 33-foot frame and lit with more than 1,200 LED lights. As of late October, the city still lists the stage schedule as TBD.

Dec. 5 is a Saturday, so the new places are on their longest hours. Lomas runs until 11 p.m., Tap N Taco until midnight and Spirit House until 1 a.m. All three stay open well after the 9 p.m. close. Here's how the evening lines up with the street closures the city has posted:

  1. 2 p.m. Arizona Avenue closes between Frye and Pecos roads until 8:30 p.m., and between Chandler Boulevard and Frye Road until 10 p.m. The city's parade page lists slightly different start times, so check both pages that week.
  2. 4:30 p.m. The ceremony opens. This is the time to park and visit Santa's House, which offers free photos and letters to Santa.
  3. 6 p.m. Arizona Avenue closes between Galveston Street and Chandler Boulevard until 9:30 p.m., and Chandler Boulevard is restricted from Delaware Street to California Street until 9 p.m.
  4. 6:30 to 8 p.m. Santa's House closes while Santa rides in the parade.
  5. After 9 p.m. The event ends. Lomas at Arizona and Chandler Boulevard and Tap N Taco south of Boston Street are both still serving.

For parking, the city lists the Overstreet, Oregon Street, City Hall, Alexander and Jonathon garages, plus surface lots at the San Tan Regional Court, a city lot, the police department and the downtown library. Folley Park is the supplemental lot. The ceremony page marks the P2 street-parking lot as closed for construction. The city's PDF parking map still labels P2 as accessible parking, so plan on a garage. The city recommends carpooling and arriving early.
